What is the process for getting a PFA?
The process begins with a Petition that is filed at a local Magistrate or with the County Court directly. Once the petition is filed, the judge will either grant you a temporary PFA and set a hearing date or will deny the temporary PFA and schedule a hearing date within 10 business days. At the hearing, you may have to testify about the circumstances that led you to file the PFA. For victims of abuse, this can be a difficult task.
